Deepa Pooja
Deepa Pooja, the lighting of a lamp, is a fundamental and symbolic ritual in every Hindu household. A lamp (usually with ghee or sesame oil) is lit before a deity or in the home altar to dispel darkness and ignorance while invoking divine presence and wisdom. The flame symbolizes the atma (soul) and is a reminder of the eternal light within.
This ritual is performed in the morning after bathing and in the evening at sunset. Women especially take great care in maintaining the lamp, often decorating the area with rangoli and placing fresh flowers. As the lamp is lit, slokas like “Shubham Karoti Kalyanam” or the “Deepam Jyoti” mantra are recited.
Lighting the deepa also marks the start of auspicious events, new ventures, and prayers. It is believed to bring peace, ward off negative energies, and create a sattvic (pure) ambiance. Deepa Pooja, though simple in action, holds deep spiritual significance, reminding us to keep our inner light burning through devotion and discipline.
