Makar Sankranti Rituals

Makar Sankranti is a solar festival marking the sun’s transition into Capricorn (Makara Rashi), symbolizing longer, brighter days and the end of winter. It is celebrated with offerings to the Sun God (Surya), kite flying, charity, and the consumption of sesame (til) and jaggery (gur) sweets. It is one of the few Hindu festivals based on the solar calendar.

Rituals include early morning baths in holy rivers, chanting of Gayatri Mantra or Surya Ashtakam, and offering water (Arghya) to the Sun. Donating clothes, food, and money is considered highly meritorious. Families prepare special foods like khichdi, til laddoos, and distribute them among neighbors and the poor.

Makar Sankranti represents light, knowledge, and the awakening of new spiritual energy. It marks a phase of spiritual enlightenment, charity, and gratitude for the life-giving power of the sun. The festival also reminds us of the importance of aligning our lives with nature and cosmic rhythms.
