Namkaran

Namkaran Sanskar is the formal naming ceremony of a newborn, typically performed on the 11th or 12th day after birth. The ritual marks the child’s identity and entry into the family and community. According to tradition, the name is chosen based on the baby’s birth star (nakshatra), astrology, and family customs.

The pooja begins with purification rituals and a havan (fire ceremony) to invoke blessings of the family deity and the Pancha Mahabhutas (five elements). The name is whispered into the baby’s right ear by the father or family priest. Offerings of sweets, fruits, and flowers are made, and relatives often shower the child with blessings and gifts.

Namkaran symbolizes the beginning of social and spiritual identity. It’s a joyful event where the family seeks divine protection for the child’s well-being and a meaningful life. Spiritually, it is believed that the vibrations of a properly chosen name resonate with the child’s destiny and dharma.
