Pongal Pooja

Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated with devotion and joy, especially in Tamil Nadu. It is a thanksgiving to Surya (the Sun God), Indra (rain god), and farm animals for a successful harvest. Pongal spans four days—Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal—each with its own set of rituals and meanings.

The central ritual is the cooking of the Pongal dish—rice boiled with milk and jaggery in a clay pot under the sun, allowing it to overflow as a symbol of abundance. Offerings of sugarcane, bananas, turmeric, and betel leaves are made along with chanting of prayers to Surya. The Kolam (rangoli) is drawn at the entrance of homes, inviting prosperity.

Pongal Pooja promotes gratitude, ecological awareness, and celebration of life’s basic blessings. It connects people to nature, the soil, and divine forces behind agriculture. The festival is also a time for family bonding, cultural performances, and setting positive intentions for the year ahead.
