Upanayanam
Upanayanam or Yajnopavita Sanskar is a significant initiation ritual, especially for Brahmin boys, symbolizing the start of formal education and spiritual study. The sacred thread (janeu) is worn over the left shoulder, signifying entry into Brahmacharya (student life) and readiness to learn the Vedas.
The ceremony includes several rituals—Ganapati pooja, Havan, and teaching of the Gayatri Mantra, which the child begins to recite daily. The guru or father acts as the spiritual guide and performs the Upadesha (sacred instruction). The child is also given a danda (staff) and kamandalu (water pot) as symbols of discipline and austerity.
Spiritually, Upanayanam marks the awakening of inner wisdom and the journey towards self-realization. It instills values of truth, discipline, humility, and devotion. The ritual emphasizes the importance of education as a sacred duty and a path to higher consciousness.
