Vidyarambham

Vidyarambham or Aksharabhyasam is the ritual of introducing a child to learning, writing, and the goddess of knowledge, Saraswati. Usually performed when the child is around 4–5 years old, it marks the start of formal education and reverence for knowledge as divine.

The child is helped to write their first letters—often “Om” or alphabets—on a tray of rice or a slate, guided by a guru or parent. A pooja to Goddess Saraswati is conducted with offerings of books, flowers, and sweets. Mantras are recited to bless the child’s intellect and remove learning obstacles.

Vidyarambham instills the value of education and wisdom early in life. It teaches children to view learning as sacred and teachers as guides to the divine. The ritual helps align the child’s mental faculties with higher purpose and opens the door to lifelong learning and inner growth.
